Bird of Paradise Plant

A new addition in the Orangery at Saltram House Gardens in Plymouth is a Bird of Paradise plant. At first I thought it must be a banana plant.
The plant grows wild in South Africa and is pollinated by birds. According to the BBC Gardeners World magazine the plant has sturdy leaf stems which can bear the weight of several birds at a time.
