Meadow Cranesbill - Geranium pratense

There is a stretch of land between the railway line and the coast from Kirkcaldy to Kinghorn that is of great interest to me,

About 30 years ago, it was declared a Scottish Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSSI) but I don't know what its current status is. It has interesting geology as well as important botanical and invertebrate species.

The main rocks are sandstone (with some shale and limestone) and ingeous intrusions (mostly of dolorite).

There are two prominent species of geranium with a sidtribution that matches the underlying geology. Bloody cranesbill is found where the igneous intrusions are and meadow cranesbill is found over the sedimentary strata.

This is the bluer of the two - Meadow Cranesbill (Geranium pratense)
