High Water

The water level in the lake at Verulamium Park, St Albans, is well up again and flooding over the paths.  They have given up trying to keep the public conveniences (on the left) open.

An excellent evening at the photographic society.  We had a presentation by Marc Aspland, Chief Sports Photographer at The Times newspaper.  At the start of his presentation he said that, at a typical sporting event, there may be a row of photographers standing next to each other with virtually the same equipment, all hoping to catch the key moments of the event.  Marc's aim is to find something unique, different.  He then showed us a series of images which demonstrated his ability to do just that. After more than thirty years at The Times, he still comes up with original and creative ideas to produce new and exciting images. (Who else would think of using a tilt-shift lens to photograph sports?)

It was a very entertaining evening.  Marc may not be the most confident presenter:  he is modest, unassuming and a thoroughly nice guy and his presentation this evening was one of the best club evenings I  can remember.

Footnote:  Marc brought along a clutch of Canon R3s and lenses to demonstrate the kit that he uses. He also mentioned in passing that he had been testing the Canon R1 (yet to be formally announced and released) so I guess it will be released very soon.
