Cheesy

We’re back in what a friend of mine calls “That Edinburgh “ - not for the rugby , fun though that would be, but to use one of our Christmas gifts and to celebrate the second son’s birthday tomorrow.

We left home in an interesting mélange of hail showers, rainbows, dramatic swirling clouds and sunshine, all swept along on a deeply chilly wind, and arrived in a more benign if still chilly Edinburgh in the later afternoon - just time enough to negotiate the mysterious roadworks that were put there specially to make our journey more interesting and visit #1 son for a quick coffee. We had the bonus of seeing the boys too - human, canine and feline - so it was well worth the détour.

The focus of the evening was a cheese-tasting event in Mellis the cheesemonger’s Cheese Lounge in Morningside. A charming American explained various intriguing points in cheese making and how the three wines she’d chosen for us complemented the different cheeses chosen. There was fab bread and gritty toasted flatbread and a wedge of membrillo paste and we ate and sipped and listened to the quiet conversations around us - guessing which couples were married and which on a date…

A taxi back to our hotel rattled over the cobbles in record time ( and I’m dead impressed by the Central Taxis app, btw) and I’m actually blipping this in bed, on my phone, with sleep already seducing me.

Photo surreptitiously snatched from my seat in the cheesery…
