Extras: I don't often play around with abstract things, but opportunity knocked today. I'll leave them as open questions, just to see if it's obvious what they are

The shrub is 'Osmanthus': a nice name, because it means 'smelly flower' - which is true, it does smell lovely, but only if you get really close, so far. It's not native - originally from South Asia, so probably not very adapted to freezing temperatures and cold rain, which is what has greeted its flowering this year. Only the most forward flowers are open yet. It has been planted for several years, but seems suddenly to have found its feet and put on a show
