"GEEZ....THAT SUN FEELS SO GOOD!"

This is the Eastern Chipmunk (Tamias striatus); found in North America and is quite common.  It's related to ground squirrels of which there are many species.  It is typically found in wooded areas and is often confused by non-biologists with the Thirteen-lined Ground Squirrel (Ictidomys tridecemlineatus) a.k.a. Gopher, which is more common in open areas.

All sorts of rodents who spend the winter in a torpid state are waking up and starting to root around for whatever food they can find.  Typically, they don't show up in abundance until a month or more from now. Typically, we're buried by several feet of snow this time of year....but not this year.  We have set all sorts of warm weather records and just had the warmest February in recorded history.
