Lantana

On our walk each morning, Fletch and I are treated to three large Lantana bushes growing on the outside of a wooden fence. They bloom in three different colors and are quite spectacular. Lantana is in the verbena family and is native to tropical regions of the Americas and Africa, being introduced the Australian-Pacific region, South and Northeastern India and here in Florida. Unfortunately it can be rather invasive and is poisonous to humans, pets and livestock. I do not grow it in my yard! There are sterile non invasive cultivars available; Gold Mound, New Gold, Alba and Patriot. There are also Florida Native Lantanas; Pineland Lantana, Hammock Shrubverbena and Buttonsage. These natives are nectar sources for local butterflies
