Stinking Hellebore  ( Helleborus foetidus )

A native wild plant which likes Calcium rich soils. It is essentially a wild plant but it is also found in many gardens including ours. Its leaves are evergreen. The bunches of flowers are green but have an attractive claret coloured ring round the petal edges.

The odour is not as bad as the name implies. One book calls it  mousy.

Here it is growing in the gardens of the National Trust’s Sizergh Castle.
