What fantastic weather we had for most of the walk, sunny and not much wind... until we got to Stanage Edge, which is well known for being windy.

The top half of the collage shows Stanage from a distance, the dark line in the centre, and the bottom half is as we walked along it. We went as far as Robin Hood's Cave, where we ate lunch.

Someone had set a top rope up at the far end, although there didn't appear to be anyone climbing. The area was very busy with families of walkers though (including a man wearing shorts and Crocs!) and I became more and more annoyed/concerned because they were treading on the ropes, stepping over them to get further along.

Obviously non-climbers don't know what's happening, or that ropes shouldn't be stepped on, but the climber who set it up perhaps should've realised that sunny saturdays might get busy and there were better places to put his toprope. Then someone began climbing on the rope, and almost simultaneously one of the men stepping over the ropes up top managed to trip and fall over!

I was sitting quite far away... but perhaps I should've said something, and risked being sworn at. But anyway I'm afraid I didn't, and after the potentially very serious trip (he was about a metre from the edge) I just wanted to get away and start walking.

Of course no-one else in our ramblers could see that there was anything wrong or risky with what other people were doing. On reflection, because I could see the dangers, I really should've gone over and advised them to keep away from the ropes, and/or shouted over the edge to the climber, who looked like he was working a project.  :-(
