The Pensioner

By Pensioner

Famous Tony Benn by-election town (1984)

Blimey, a full-on day starting with brunch at the Bottle & Thyme in Chesterfield, followed by a visit to the Eerie Motel, California (well, in Chesterfield Escape Rooms tbh) and then a nosey around the streets. The wonky spire! And an old RBS with Deacons Bank ghost writing! That was so thrilling I sent it to the old colleagues.
Back to Matlock briefly before a game of football - Matlock Town vs Whitby in the top flight of the Northern Premier League. Great entertainment, with no shortage of goals - the home side being on the receiving end of a 5-1 “battering" from the fish & chip men. Ho ho! And you can buy beers and quaff them on the touchline. England's terrific!
Off to Belper for a nosh and then a movie at the very wonderful Ritz in that very town. Dune 2. It’s a right load (2hrs 46mins of it) of old hokum and gobbledygook with sub-Jesus Christ superstar script, but I guess that’s the original book. And… I didn’t realise…. Dune 3 is going to be along at some point to finish the story. But hey, we were treated and the nippers loved it so we were diplomatic.
Back to conk out.
