This is what happened

This is the same Amaryllis that my neighbour cared for whilst we were in Cornwall. When she returned it to me, there were three flowers on one stem, but we realised there were some more to come. Flowers on the second stem soon began to open - one, two, three flowers!

I had kept turning it and supporting it, but a day or two ago it fell over, breaking the stem. I decided to put the stem into water and it has been fine. There has even been a fourth flower - so here are four flowers looking good. I was fascinated with what had happened to the base of the stem - it has coiled up . . . rather beautifully.
