Elmhurst

I walked to South Woodford this afternoon for a hearing test, and was taken by the sight of this lovely house in the sunshine, with its mown lawn and blossom tree setting it off to perfection.

It is called Elmhurst, and is a Grade II listed late 18th century building on the High Road, South Woodford.

It was converted into a hostel for Queen Mary College, London in 1926. In 1969 three unsightly tower blocks were built on land behind it as student halls of residence. They were sold for development in 2003 and demolished, being replaced by nearly 500 new homes in apartment blocks.
