Deco tastic

We stayed at the Midland Hotel in Morecambe over the weekend. I saw the hotel in a travel mag ages ago when it was first refurbished and have been itching to stay there for some time. It's a glorious Art Deco monument although the refurbishment has put a more contemporary spin on the decor it still clings to the original spirit of the building.

Our room on the 3rd floor had floor to ceiling sliding windows that slid the full length of the room and a bath and shower that had an open aspect to the whole of the bay. Which was kind of a strange feeling with only a piece of glass between you and the Irish Sea while standing butt naked in the shower but with only the seagulls looking in one felt quite at ease.

The staff were fantastic and very proud and knowledgeable of their hotel and never tired of telling us about all the celebs who have stayed there and the films and TV series shot there.

Also in the function room there is a fantastic plaster relief by Eric Gill that was originally bricked up at some point in its history then unearthed by some surprised builders during the refurbishment.

Sadly the rest of Morecambe is a different story while the sea front is a very pleasant place to be (weather permitting) the town centre suffers from a bad case of urban blight and is quite depressing. Such a sad sight for a once fine seaside town.
