Costa Rica Day 3 - Tortugero - Green Basilisk

This morning I watched the sunrise over the Caribbean (yesterdays first extra) and then after breakfast we were taken by boat a short distance to the main village of Tortugero.   Even though it was a small settlement, it had a high school, doctor/medical centre and a recycling plant.  That was pretty impressive as a small village in the Australian outback would not necessarily have those three things.  We walked back to the lodge from there and then had a swim before lunch.

After lunch it was a boat trip into the jungle to see what we could find.   It really is quite impressive with massive palms and trees.   We found this green basilisk hiding in the dark recesses near the waterline.  He really is quite a cool chap I thought.  We saw a mamma sloth with baby (first extra) a shame her head was hiding but you can get the drift.  There were birds including this green backed heron (second extra), an iguana munching on a vine (third extra) and one high in the tree tops.  I guess if you live in the jungle you need to get up high to get some sun.

When we got back we did a night walk though the jungle which involved another boat ride to get to it.  We saw mostly crickets, grasshopers, lots of toads before we went in, an owl butterfly and a blunt headed snake (fourth extra). They are not poisonous but they bite and the bite can give you a nasty infection.

We were late getting back to dinner and exhausted by the heat and what we had done that day and so it was straight to bed.
