Wet day in Matsumoto

We experienced seriously heavy rain and cold temperatures today, in the small city of Matsumoto in the Japanese Alps. The extra shows some of our tour group taking shelter from the rain while waiting for Matsumoto Castle to open for the day.

My main photo today was taken in the wonderful art museum, Ukiyoe, in Matsumoto. The two central art works are wood block prints by the artist Hosukai, created in the 1830s. The one on the left is The Great Wave off Kanagawa - Mt Fuji is shown as a tiny object under the huge breaking wave. To the right of that, Fine Wind, Clear Morning, gives Fuji greater prominence. I first saw these works in Canberra, in an exhibition that traced the way Monet was influenced by Japanese art.
