Kath's Journal

By Kathb

This is a variety of the Spanish Bluebell. Spanish bluebells are an invasive species and although they are a threat to our own English bluebell, they are still pretty. They are also a good nectar source for bees and butterflies.

How to tell the difference between native and non-native bluebells:

- Spanish bluebells can be more lavender than blue and are sometimes pink or white

- Native bluebells have long droopy narrow heads. Spanish bluebell heads are much more upright and are more open and star shaped.

- Native bluebell heads hang from the same side of the stem. Spanish bluebell heads are more random and usually hang from all sides.

Native bluebells are protected by law. Spanish bluebells are not protected.
