Consumer unit

After a bit of scheduling today was the day for our consumer unit - or in old language “fuse box” - to be raised.

The level of the original one was such that you had to get on your hands and knees and peer up under the lid to see what had tripped.

We decided that as we age further, it would be increasingly difficult to bend down and see what had been triggered and which circuit needed attention.

So from around 09:30 all power was off. No Wi-Fi, kettle, lights. And the young electrician began the task of making sense of all the wires and connecting them to the newly located consumer unit at shoulder height. Over 8 hours later, and with some new power sockets neatly fitted by the other electrician ( one always needs more sockets) the power was reconnected and everything worked.

An impressive piece of work. A few more minor things to sort out in the coming days but that is the “main” task done.

Fortunately it was a lovely spring day so out came the shorts and for most of the day I just dozed in the sunshine. I did a little bit of weeding and dead headed the hydrangea. But I could not cut the grass: no power!
