After yesterday's revelatory village visit we decided to continue our townlet based odyssey (maybe not quite on a par with Homer's!) and take a short drive out to East Peckham.
It may not be quite as picturesque or in such a glorious setting as Sutton Valence, which we called in upon yesterday, but it definitely has a unique character of its own. I was fascinated by the fact that the village actually developed from nine separate hamlets with some fantastic names - Roydon, Hale Street, Beltring, Little Mill, The Pound, Snoll Hatch (my particular favourite!), Goose Green and Chidley Cross. It was a settlement originally focused on hop growing and agriculture.
Today's image is of the Grade II listed Holy Trinity church in the centre of the village. This 'new church' was built in 1842 to replace the medieval parish church of St Michael and All Angels with was situated two miles away from the present 19th Century village.
It looks quite austere from the outside - the weather today added to this feeling with a rather glowering sky which accentuated those dark tree branches (although the pops of green from the burgeoning Spring leaves did dilute this a little) - and it initially gives the same impression inside, particularly above its west entrance where there is a massive gabled belfry which can appear harsh and imposing, indeed some might say sinister, but in spite of it being plain and simple it felt surprisingly calming and welcoming. Although it appears I had not gone unnoticed by The Father, The Son and The Holy Spirit! :-)
