Guatemala

Our friend from Guatemala came to lunch today. We have known her for more than forty years from the time when we were both in the baby sitting circle. At the same time our husbands met when they commuted from the local station. We were close friends, adults and children.

S was brought up in Guatemala but came home with her Scottish parents in her teens. She has always wanted to go back and when she retired she left her husband and went to live in Guatemala. She left behind her grown up children and four grandchildren. She comes to see them and her friends every year but is still very happy in the land of her childhood.

We visited her in 2002 and were enchanted with the beautiful country and the happy people. I bought lots of stunning fabrics and embroideries, amongst them this belt. You are seeing the two ends of the ten foot long, four inch wide belt worn by the local men, wrapped around their waist several times before being looped at the front. Needless to say I don't wear it - it is hung from the corner of a curtain pole.
