Pompeii

Rob and I have just finished listening to an audiobook of Robert Harris’ Pompeii. This is a brilliantly told historical novel of the last few days of the town of Pompeii, with details of Pliny’s naval expedition to try and rescucivilians and the invaluable library.
By coincidence there is a fascinating BBC2 documentary about the latest excavations being broadcast at the moment.
I remember as a child being fascinated by the then new excavations revealing the petrified casts of people trying to escape and this interest has stayed with me.
As I am just finishing the tapestry piece I am working on, it occurred to me that this would be an interesting subject for a new design, and when I spotted this painting on line I thought it was a perfect inspiration. It shows Pliny’s navy heading in to the shore in their ill fated rescue attempt.
This may be something for the winter hours!
