war memorial Ist World War

This memorial is in the cemetary at the end of my street. It's just been cleaned. I was so struck by the inscription!!. Why do you think a female form is used to commemerate male carnage. The wonderfull Feminist writer / poet Adrienne Rich, in her article ' Wimmin and Honour, Notes on Lying ' say's male honour is to do with death. This memorial seems to confirm that eh!
