The Pensioner

Salonistas

Over to the yard briefly to inflate the dinghy. And blether with anyone hanging about. Martin. Tam. The bin has been overfilled. We’re no happy.
But the main event was off up town to the Outhouse for the … pause for effect… Edinburgh Literary Salon! Woah, eh? A fin de siècle Vienna vibe perhaps? This was flagged up to us by Michael MacLeod's very wonderful daily Edinburgh Cultural Minute which is available on substack and which I’d recommend to all you Edinburgh hipsters out there. I mean, pensioners.
Anyway, the reason that we were attending this one was that James Rice, one of the people behind the rescue of the Filmhouse was giving a talk on that very subject. And who was there right beside us but the esteemed Joy Hendry, long time editor of Chapman which ceased publication in 2011. Handing out spare old back copies for free as her house is full of them and she’s down-sizing. I nabbed the edition issued just after Donald Dewar’s untimely demise. Ah, an age when giants trod the earth.
