Finding fault

Today began misty again and the forecast was for rain later, so we set off for Peel where there are several indoor options.

On the way we diverted to Niarbyl Bay, where we wanted to see the Niarbyl Fault. "The Niarbyl Fault is an exposed section of the Iapetus Suture, a fault caused by the collision of two ancient tectonic plates – Avalonia on which present-day England is located and Laurentia which contains North America and parts of Scotland – that extends across the Irish Sea." We drove down to Niarbyl Bay where we found a strange seat outside the Niarbyl Cafe, which is being renovated. This is apparently a 'Stargazers' Seat'and is my Blip today.

We walked down to the beach to find the fault and found a white diagonal line in the cliffs which I assumed was nothing to do with it - I took a picture anyway. It turns out this that was the fault line, so it's my extra today!

Going on to Peel we had a walk around the harbour front before finding a cafe for lunch. By this time it was beginning to rain so we spent a couple of hours in the amazing House of Manannan, a museum with incredible reconstructions describing the history of the Isle of Man, rather like the Jorvik Centre in York.

Peel seemed to be a rather run-down place, with a great many houses for sale and shops apparently closed down - I don't know why.

An interesting day out, but it was good to get back to the house and sit down with a cuppa!

Quote of the Day: “Rainy days should be spent at home with a cup of tea and a good book.”
