"The Cause of the People"

Walking back up to St Andrews House from speaking at the Balmoral to a group of international Harvard Business School alumni who own their own businesses and who were on a Scottish study tour I nipped into the Calton Graveyard to blip this stark monument against a blue sky with shreds of cloud, fast disappearing in the sun.

I managed to get it at just the right moment.

It is ,of course, the Martyrs Memorial which commemorates the trial and conviction in 1793 of "The friends of the people " - Thomas Muir and his companions whose pursuit of suffrage, liberty and justice earned them savage sentences of transportation - but also acts as a monumental and very visible proof of their vindication.
