Guarded

This is our front gate to the office and that is Peter, the guard. I give him a lift home at times as we live in the same direction and the lift saves him a good 1.5 hours or so. He hails from the north of the country but spends his days here in Nairobi opening and closing the gates.

But when this young man goes home, he tells me stories about life in Turkana. Apparently it takes him up to 17 hours by bus to get near his home and after alighting, he has to walk another few hours before finally arriving 'home'.

I am then told that when he goes home on holiday, he throws off most of his clothes and shoes and walks around with his goats and sheep in nothing more than a sheet. Now, I have also been told that many in his area carry rifles... AK47s to be exact!! Due to all the cattle raids in the north of the country, it is apparently rather important to have some firepower. So upon returning to his humble 'day job' he has plenty of stories about how far he walked and how dangerous it was and ..and how you can trade sheep for bullets.

A rather amazing young man whose life at home sounds a bit like living in the wild west!!
