Abandoned Berlin

For the Berlin resident it's practically a rite of passage to explore the still many abandoned sites, especially Teufelsberg and Spreepark. We went for the less mainstream options and had a peek in at the abandoned hospital on Mariendorfer Weg and the Eisfabrik.

The abandoned hospital in Neukölln just proves that hospitals really are even creepier when they're empty. It closed down in 2005 after only being open about 30 years, but that's all that I could dig up on the place. My heart was pumping the entire time after we slid through the slightly-open gate, it was like something out of a horror film. Dark, eerie, suspicious stains that looked very similar to blood on the stairs... the kind of place you'd expect to find a body.

The Eisfabrik is one of the oldest ice factory buildings in Germany, opened in 1896 and closed in 1995. Despite being listed, it's soon to be ripped down, which is such a shame; in comparison with the haunted hospital, it was light, open and so welcoming. There are some pretty permanent-looking residents in and outside of the factory who were so nice and friendly, inviting us in and pointing out the art works. Such a nice contrast!
