Small White - Pieris rapae

For the last couple of months, the predominant white in the countryside has been the green-veined white but now that the Big Butterfly Count has started, they have gone into decline locally and have been replaced by small whites (Pieris rapae).

One site (nowhere near where I was yesterday) had eight small tortoiseshells in close proximity - all in pristine condition.

The six-spot burnet moths are now looking a bit worn out now - so bad in fact that the loss of scales from their forewings is letting the red hindwing show through.

Also seen were a few ringlets and a solitary meadow brown.

Weather and time permitting, I'll visit Lochore Meadows tomorrow where I expect lots of meadow browns and small heaths. Maybe a small copper or two.
