The Fan Dancer

Summer community theatre: now starring Lady Greensleeves (or LadyG) the hummingbird, as a fan dancer . . .

We've had a heat wave for the past week in the northeastern U.S. The strong thunderstorms that were predicted to occur on this day, as a cooler front moved through, stayed to our south. So the only impact of the new and improved weather system was a bit of wind, which we sat in our shady backyard and thoroughly enjoyed.

The monarda blooms in my butterfly garden are huge and red, and the hummingbirds just can't resist them. So we were treated to quite a show as we enjoyed the breezes in the backyard. Hummingbirds flitting this way and that! Fast maneuvers, speedy dives, lots of swooping and chirping! Oh, and one of my fancy bugs - the red one that I was unable to photograph yesterday - came back! So things were quite lively and very entertaining.

I took lots and lots of photos, as you might imagine. And when I looked at them later, in this particular photo, Lady Greensleeves the hummingbird appeared to be using her tiny green wings like a fan dancer. What an impressive show!

The song that this scene reminded me of: Queen Latifah performing a bit of a fan dancer routine, in the song When You're Good to Mama, from the film/musical Chicago.
