Life At Dragonfly Cottage

A Wisteria Miracle...

Wisteria does not bloom here this time of year. Does Not. And yet, is has.

Here on the coast of North Carolina where we average temps of about 100 degrees with 100% humidity my beloved wisteria has a very short lived bloom time in spring, and it is worth the wait all year round. I published this wisteria in full bloom early on in recording my podcasts back about April. Within 2 weeks or less it blooms and then the flowers are gone but they are long racemes of purple flowers so powerfully fragrant they will perfume a neighborhood. Once the bloomtime has passed, however, they can become like the plant in The Little Shop of Horrors and take over the world pulling down small buildings and little trees!

As always my wisteria got a pretty good pruning without scalping it because it blooms on old wood but it was beginning to look like Alfred Einstein's hair going in every direction wildly. Four weeks ago the pruning, all of a sudden it is blooming again, albeit spottily, and not the big fat racemes of early spring but very long slender bright purple and yes incredibly fragrant flowers that look so delicate it is as though they belong in a Japanese painting. Another summer miracle. I shall cherish the wisteria dearly for this wondrous gift, and capture it in watercolor as well. This is a time for celebration!
