Breakwater Light House

Went to Port Washington today, which is a quaint little city about 45 minutes from our house. In 1934 the city constructed a half mile pier out into the harbor, & in 1935 built this art deco styled lighthouse at the end of it. Originally, the keeper had to walk from the lighthouse that's way up on the nearby hill out to this one to light the lamp, & he did it every night. It was automated in 1975, so the keeper no longer had to walk back & forth. I can't imagine walking the pier in the winter when the path would be caked with ice! Although you can still walk all the way out to the lighthouse, we stopped when the pier narrowed in half, because as you can see in the picture it was very windy & the waves were breaking over the pier....I had no desire to end up in the lake!!
