The Green Giants

On 8th July I blipped my daughter's raised bed which contained a few fairly immature plants. Today you see what a different three weeks of sunshine makes. It's like the 'day of the triffids'. Here is the prolific growth of three kale plants in the foreground and one courgette plant behind them, as well as some lettuce and chives - all grown organically.

I've been extolling the health attributes of kale to my daughter. One cup of chopped kale has 134% of your recommended daily intake of Vitamin C - that's more than the average orange. It' s a great source of the omega-3 fatty acid essential for brain and heart health. It has more Vitamin A than any other green vegetable and 150 mg calcium per 100 grams. It is also full of phytonutrients which combat inflammation, arterial plaque formation and fight cancer. These properties become most effective when kale is combined with a good fat like olive oil, avocado or even parmesan.

She should be bursting with health it she gets through this lot!
