Fyvie Castle, Aberdeenshire

A very wet drive north to Fyvie Castle and we were met by a closed door. On approaching the door a small notice inviting us in. What a treat when we stepped inside. An impressive entrance hall, and then a climb up a great wheel stair, 10 feet wide in places, even a horse has gone up the spiral.

Originally built in the 13th century, the Prestons, Meldrums, Setons, Gordons and Leiths have added wings and turrets to the impressive building. So many portraits to enjoy, the castle boasts one of the largest private collections of Raeburns in the world. A large collection of armour and tapestries too, as well as impressive fireplaces, a strongroom, and of course, a resident ghost. I liked the inscription on the outside wall of the Hall on the left, added by Sir Alexander Forbes-Leith "Gang East and Wast, but Hames best". He and his American wife, Louise January, entertained politicians and royalty here.

From here, a drive through the glens to the Cairngorms, and the promise of better weather over the next few days.

Catching up on my Blips now that I am home, we've had no wi-fi for the last few days.
