Barra Airport Runway

This morning we were up early as we were going sea kayaking. It's many years since I have done this so went with a little trepidation. We had a fantastic trip, managing around 7 miles of paddling round the coast of Barra from Castlebay and over to the Island of Vatersay. The seals were popping up all around us and we saw herons, oystercatchers Atlantic grey seals and common seals. It was totally brilliant, I loved it except for the fact I took no photos as the risk of getting a camera wet was too high.

Later on we headed up to Barra airport where the planes land and take off on the sand (I believe this is the only place in the world that this happens). We saw one take off and one landed a short time later. This shot was taken at the top end of the beach.

We walked up and over to a further 2 beautiful sandy beaches then back the the airport terminal (I use the term loosely), we then followed a path through some massive sand dunes to another massive Atlantic coast beach, this one a bit wilder and rugged.

We had a carry out, some very fresh haddock and an early night as we are moving on tomorrow and need to pack up and get to the ferry for Eriskay.
