South Uist sunset

This is a surprise, I tried to post from the ferry where they were doing a wifi trial, it said the upload was unsuccessful but it appears not!

This morning we were up and packed early and left for the ferry to Eriskay, we couldn't book so wanted to be there early. We got on no problem although it was full and made the short crossing to Eriskay.

We decided to do a circular walk that took you along the beach where Bonnie Prince Charlie first set foot on Scottish soil in 1745 to begin the Jacobite uprising, and past the monument that commemorates this important chapter in Scottish history. We carried on round the road and then onto a track leading up hill, the teach soon turned to hillside with the odd way marker and by now we were in search of the wild Eriskay ponies. We were very lucky as we saw about 6 of them further up the rocks.

There was a lovely small loch and also the most fantastic view from the top over Barra and the smaller Islands. When we got back to the village we had a pretty good lunch in the Am Politician pub (named after the SS Politician that sank off the coast of Eriskay in 1941, the cargo included 28,000 cases of malt whisky. Most of the wreck cargo was "salvaged"by the islanders, the looting of the politician was the basis for the book and film "Whisky Galore".

We moved on over the causeway to South Uist, our base for the next 2 nights. Our accommodation was pre booked and wasn't far from the ferry. We settled in and then went fro a wander along the beach and then sat outside in the sun, looking out over Eriskay with a drink. our evening meal there was fantastic with the best smoked salmon I have ever eaten!

The Polacher Inn proved to be an excellent choice and I would highly recommend it. This sunset was taken from just outside the hotel.
