Amsterdam

To paraphrase the words of Paul Heaton’s song, ‘Rotterdam or Anywhere’, ‘This could be Amsterdam or Utrecht or anywhere with canals!’ but if you read yesterday’s blip you’d know that we had a visit to Amsterdam planned for today.

The plan was to see as many pleins (squares) and grachts (canals) as we could in the time we allotted to this visit.  We’ve seen them all in our previous visits to Amsterdam but we enjoyed seeing them again.

The answer is they haven’t changed much at all.  There are lots of works going on around the city which we were aware of and that in part was why we decided to stay in Utrecht.  Our ‘tour’ was frequently interrupted by roads, canals and bridges having work carried out on them.

It’s never easy to walk round Amsterdam at the best of times as cyclists come at you from all angles and you have to have your wits about you.

.
Thankfully we got around unscathed.  The place was heaving with tourists and all the cafés, bars and restaurants were doing a roaring trade.
