Robin Hood's Bay
A rather dull start to the day here in Raw, which sounds like a sort of image! I must try to find out where the name of the village originated.
We drove down the coast to Ravenscar, a scattered settlement overlooking Robin Hood's Bay, and called in at the National Trust shop where we picked up a walks leaflet. We chose a modest walk of a few miles which took us down the hillside to the site of the Alum Works, now only ruins, which was the reason for Ravenscar coming into existence in the first place.
It was a pretty steep climb back up, seeing as it was a bad knee day anyway, so we were glad to sit down at the NT shop and enjoy a snack lunch. My Blip today is the view across Robin Hood's Bay.
Later on we drove to Robin Hood's Bay, the actual village, and walked down the hill to the sea. Being Easter Saturday it was mobbed, with probably as many dogs as people!! I'm afraid that with the crowds, the weather and sore legs we thought that the place was grim, which I'm sure was quite unfair. It was hard to image the place in the days before mass tourism, when the local fishermen and their families would be seen walking about the steep streets and picturesque alleys, but I did try! Several times I waited for quite a while until an alley was deserted before grabbing a picture!
Glad to get back to the car and return to Raw.
