Benmore Dam is the second biggest Earth dam in the Southern Hemisphere and is used to generate High Voltage D.C. This is transported to the north island through Transmisson Lines and at Hayward Substation, Wellington, where it is transversed back to High Voltage AC. for uses in the North Island grid.
