A day in Gréoux-les-Bains

A rest day from the long walks which we were glad of. We first walked for an hour or so by the river Verdon which flows along the southern edge of the town. Very lovely, masses of trees and wildflowers, the level is much higher than usual because of last week’s heavy rain. (first extra). Then a little look in the Romanesque church, which was very nice I thought (second extra). Our first meal not at the hotel is a really good salad Niçoise in a café, where the manager’s little daughter (age 4) draws us pictures and gives me a hug.  She’s as bright as a button, and knows we’re speaking English. We’re both excavating French vocabulary from the dim and distant past, and it’s surprising what comes back. We decide to walk uphill to the castle - like a lot of hill towns there are many pathways and flights of steps. The centre of town is more or less pedestrianised. At the wall of the castle I took the third extra, of an iris and a euphorbia. My current favourites here. The castle is privately owned, but there’s a great view from the road beside it, the main photo, across the flat area beyond the town with very productive farms.  I really like the almost uniform ochre roof tiles here.  After an enjoyable and unhurried explore, we popped into a patisserie we’d had our eye on, and bought apricot and fig tarts, which were indescribably yummy:)
