We're Back...
Gainesville's Black-bellied Whistling Ducks are 'short-distance' migrants. They fly to freshwater wetland areas of South Florida and sometimes to Mexico during the winter months, and are just now returning to the neighborhood. Merlin describes them as 'boisterous' and if you share space with them you will probably agree. They used to be called the Black-bellied Tree Duck for their habit of spending much of their time in trees. They feed nocturnally and flocks can often be heard whistling as they fly over just after sun set. I love to see them in the trees as The Big White Dog and I take our walks. m
