La Retour to Portsmouth

And it's an early wake up call from our ferry 'The Normandie' to a colourless dawn at Portsmouth, standing outside watching Southsea slip past seamlessly, past Gunwharfs and grey warships, past the old HMS Warrior, past an aircraft carrier with its amazingly short take off ramp, past the old Mary Rose, watching the ferries to the Isle of Wight and Gosport plying across the congested water with early commuters, until we berth eventually and continue in the Bikeliner northwards in heavy Monday morning traffic to Hull.

We collect the car and continue home up the A68, a circuitous route over the Pennines but affording amazing views from Carter Bar over a landscape of hills, woods and harvested fields all glowing in swathes of late sunshine.
A few thunder showers pass as we near Edinburgh, but we make it home safe and dry.

It's been a wonderful week in France.
