Tiles

We had a busy day walking in amongst some trees!! Unusual to see them on Orkney, but not good enough for you. Then we talked for ages to some locals before heading to the Italian Chapel.

If you have seen this before then forgive me saying all this. Italian POWs created the chapel using two Nissan huts, scrap metal, wood from a shipwreck, some concrete and lots of paint. Not a real tile was seen anywhere near this chapel,  but it looks covered in them.

The Italians must have felt like the Roman legions sent to Britain - cold and miserable. The chapel helped restore their spirits. They were sent to Orkney to build barriers to protect Scapa Flow, which changed many things. It connected four islands previously separated, but it also changed the tides.  My extra show causeway no 4, which started out with open water on both sides. Sand started to accumulate straightaway and now the dunes stretch well over 100m. So much sand that it is now dug out and sold by one of the farmers.
