Baby Ravens
Five baby ravens in a nest. The parents were nearby and keeping watch. The nest was on a ledge on the cliff facing away from the sea and therefore quite sheltered. Even as babies these are fierce looking birds. As adults they're merciless.
In the extra a beautiful oystercatcher egg. Sadly it was stone cold so must have been abandoned.
We were at RSPB Balranald. This is a wonderful place for a walk on white sand, stones and boulders, over grassland and all the time with the sea in every direction. The wind was bracing. As well as the ravens we saw:
Lapwings
Turnstones
Ringed plovers
Eider ducks
Oystercatchers
Redshanks
Terns
Wheatears
The machair is awakening with the early flowers out. Too early for the full glory but good to see what was there.
The holiday house is lovely. Very comfortable, warm and with a view over the farmland. We will shop at the Hebridean Smokehouse for our evening meal. At the moment there's silent reading, a jigsaw and blip on the go.
I didn't think I'd forgotten how beautiful Uist is and I'm happy to see that my memory hasn't let me down.
