Imperial

Today necessitated hanging around in Eastleigh, which has a distressed, but strangely useful town centre. I always find stuff to buy in the shops here.

This is, as it says, the former Burtons store.

"The foundation stones of the Market Street store were laid by Arnold James Burton, Raymond Montague Burton and Stanley Howard Burton in 1936. The facade is probably made of polished granite. The material was used on at least 15 Burton storefronts in the 1930s."

"Montague Burton liked the first floors of his buildings to be used as temperance billiard halls. The space was designed with this in mind. Six-inch concrete floors were covered in wood block, and independent access was provided to one side of Burton’s shop."

This looks like the case here, and the Imperial Club is the oldest club in Eastleigh, it's been everything from a working man's club to a strip club to a snooker hall to a hire function room.
