Lady’s Smock

Well, that’s what we called it as kids. It’s also known as a Cuckoo Flower.

Last year, a particularly rare orchid was seen about five miles from my home. It’s a secret location.

I know that there are quite a number of orchids, such as the early purple, out already. I decided to return to the secret location as I happened to be passing.

Imagine my horror to see a huge industrial mower at work on the green. I waved to him but he totally ignored me. (At that point I didn’t really have a plan of what I was going to say.)

A dog walking local came past and I tried, discreetly, to share my concerns. He said to speak to the mower man and he noticed that the man had stopped and was talking to another, even bigger bloke, who was driving over the green in his large SUV.

I marched up and smiled at the mower man. I asked him if he knew where not to mow. He nodded and waved his arm in the correct area.

The relief.

The other bloke clearly didn’t know what I was worried about. I just took my leave of them. I wasn’t going to tell him !

My extras are the leaves of the Early Purple Orchid, not so rare, but thankfully safe.
