Look Out

The Tide is Out

I’ve taken a day out from my home sorting.

I travelled over to Liverpool’s (Anglican) Cathedral this morning to see Helios, Luke Jerram’s 7 metre diameter sculpture of the Sun (extra). It’s been here since early April and departs at the end of this week, with all sorts of associated events. Not apparent in the photo, it was a moving thing (replicating the fiery surface of our star), and was accompanied by a specially commissioned soundtrack. There is also a children’s trail to find the planets in our solar system, all to the same scale as the Sun (1:200 million) and in various parts of the cathedral (Jupiter, extra).

Having checked the tide times I then headed through the Mersey tunnel to West Kirby on the north west coast of the Wirral. It was low tide, so a window of opportunity to walk across to Little Eye, then Middle Eye, and finally Hilbre Island. Lots of people were of a similar mind, and the RNLI were much in evidence. The advice (instruction?) was to get off Hilbre three hours before high tide. The Sea Pinks/Thrift were very colourful, the blip image is taken on Middle Eye looking towards Hilbre. I only had a wide angle lens with me - a telephoto would have captured the 100+ grey seals basking on a sand bank in the Dee estuary.
