Sunset at Woopi

We’re staying tonight in a B&B in the small coastal town of Woolgoolga, 550 km north of Sydney and 350 km south of Brisbane.

‘Woopi’ is a commonly used nickname for the town. The best explanation I can find says that it originates in the Australian vernacular term ‘Woop Woop’ for a remote place. Many years ago, so it’s said, the Woolgoolga football team came from the remotest place in the Coffs Harbour district. So it was described as the team from Woop Woop, simplified to Woopi.
