Grumpy Old Man

Two for the price of one

Rather dull for most of the day, but still dry. There doesn’t seem to be any rain forecast for quite a while - unusually we could do with some!

It was the monthly u3a meeting this morning, held at the Rockfield Centre instead of the Corran Halls for some reason. I walked down with a friend and after coffee in the café we enjoyed a talk by our resident archivist, Bob McCulloch, who regularly gives talks on ‘Old Oban’. This talk was about how the history of Oban is recorded, but it turned out to be how Oban has dealt with its rubbish problem over many years, which was very interesting! The numerous ash pits which were dug and filled and the attempts to get the sewage outfalls sending their contents out to sea made for surprisingly interesting viewing!

This afternoon continued with u3a - the Poetry Group meeting.  I was given a lift over to Pulpit Hill on the other side of Oban and we had fun reading out our choices for the theme of the month, Irish Poetry. Many well-known poets such as W.B.Yeats and Seamus Heaney were  represented, but the most amusing was one of Spike Milligan’s (I hadn’t realised that he was Irish) titled ‘Mrs Dighty’ -

Mrs Dighty
In her nightie
Walking in the dark
Trod upon
A puppy dog’s tail
And made the creature bark.
Mrs Dighty
In her nightie
Let the puppy go
By lifting up
Her instep
And raising her
Big toe.

My Blip today is a meeting, almost, of the two ferries, ‘Coruisk', outbound and 'Isle of Mull', inbound. By the time I got home the sun was trying to come out - a good end to the day.

Quote of the Day: 'It's difficult to learn poems off by heart that don't rhyme.' -  Seamus Heaney.
