WW2 - Special constable

This photo shows my father in a demob parade in 1945 when the war had ended. As he was a farmer he did not join any of the services as he was needed to produce food and manage the work of land girls allocated to the farm too! His role was as special constable for the village which was not very onerous….he had to do rounds to check people’s black outs at night. His medal is in the extra…on the back it says ‘ For faithful service in the special constabulary’. Living in the country rationing did not affect them as much as most people as they always had dairy products, meat, eggs and lots of vegetables.

I’m not sure what my mother did in the war! She was’nt in any of the services. This was before my parents were married and I think she looked after her parents and did some work on a brothers farm.

I stayed in today as I had the ‘Ovenman’ come to clean my oven..he did an excellent job and replaced both the oven bulbs too.
