No Longer In The Pink For Cafe Culture
Today started very early (3.30 a.m) as I couldn't sleep again so I thought I'd just go downstairs and watch a bit of telly - which is when the problems started.
Although the overhead lights came on nothing that was plugged into a socket would come on at all - the TV, computer, washing machine or heating and hot water. So of course the first course of action was to check the circuit breaker under the stairs. I could see that one of the switches had tripped but initially it steadfastly refused to return to the on position.
By this time I'd managed to wake my brother up (sorry bro'!) so we took it turns to keep trying the switch and eventually - hurrah - it stayed on. Frustratingly this only lasted about 45 minutes and it then tripped out again - damn!
It was still only just after 5 a.m so there was no chance of contacting anyone at this godforsaken hour. Luckily we were able to still boil some water on our gas cooker for a cup of coffee - not the best option really as there was now no chance of going back to bed to try and get some more sleep.
As soon as it hit 8 a.m I was on the helpline to our electricity supplier who confirmed there had been no power cuts in our area so suggested we contact UK Power Networks, who despite being very helpful, told me it was not a power problem either so we would have to get in contact with an electrician. We were getting nowhere fast.
Another family member who had been completely oblivious to all this, as they only got up at 9 a.m, then just vacated the house leaving the number for an electrician that we'd used previously. Thanks for that!
Very fortunately after I rang the electrician he was at the house within the hour. He checked the circuit breaker (which it turned out needed a new switch) and all the sockets before looking at one behind the fridge in our kitchen and managed to discover the malefactor - a tiny mouse had got in behind a gap in the socket and munched his way through some wiring, with its electrocuted little body still being in situ!! It turned out to be a rather costly minuscule critter too - as the bill including a new socket and wiring was £150!
After a quick trip out to get some mouse traps later in the day I felt I needed to get our for a walk and as usual took my camera with me. I did one of my usual routes past our local Sainsbury's supermarket when my eye was caught by a pop of pink highlighted by the afternoon sun as I glanced through one of the windows and I decided I liked the abstract composition enough to capture it for blip.
On closer inspection I could see that this was some of the packing paraphernalia being stacked up to remove fixtures and fittings following the closure of the supermarket's cafe. Despite Sainsbury's announcing profits of over £1 billion pounds in their latest set of accounts they have decided to close all their in-store cafes and relieve 3000 people of their employment.
Whilst I was in no way a regular frequenter of the cafe I feel so sorry for those who were - particularly the older generation who like to do their shopping and then have a reasonably priced hot meal or a cup of tea or coffee and good old natter with their friends. Exactly how much more profit do you need - and is that worth putting 3000 people out of work for!
