Vilanova de Arousa to Teo
This morning, we completed the last part of the Spiritual Variant of the Portuguese Camino, by taking the Translatio, a boat trip from Vilanova de Arousa along the coast and then up the Ulla River to Pontecessures.
According to legend, after St James was tortured to death in Palestine by Herod Agrippa, in 44AD, his followers stole his body and sailed with it in a rudderless boat. It drifted to Galicia, travelling the route up the Ulla River, and grounding at Pontecessures. They continued on foot to what is now present day Santiago de Compostela where his body was laid to rest. Later, this became a goal for many pilgrims.
It was a lovely 90minute sail, and the earlier rain soon cleared. The boat holds about 100 pilgrims, and it was a very sociable event. We passed many mussel farms before entering the narrower river.
My blip is of pilgrims crossing the bridge into Padron after we disembarked, and rejoined the traditional Portuguese Camino.
We then had a 12km walk through Galician countryside to our rural hotel in Teo. Unfortunately, the rain set in, and we arrived there very wet! However, we soon dried out and enjoyed a Galician dinner of hake on potato followed by another delicious cheesecake.
Sadly, tomorrow is our last day of walking, when we'll arrive in Santiago de Compostela, and finish our Camino.
